Ethical shopping.
The philosophy of ethical shopping is being aware of the goods we buy and the conditions in which they were produced. This means being aware of the effect their production has on the environment, the welfare of the animals involved, the compliance with food standards, where appropriate, and the working conditions of those producing the goods. Therefore issues of human rights, animal welfare and environmental protection need to be considered.
The Ethical Company Organisation has developed an accreditation scheme to support this vision of ethical production. The accreditation has a set of criteria, which have to be met which comply with appropriate ethical behaviour.
We use, consume and wear a huge amount of items whose manufacture leaves an ecological footprint.
Issues that have shown to be prevalent and detrimental include pollution to the environment; the destruction of animal habitats and the ignorance of human rights in sweatshops and by the use of child labour. The workers involved are people grateful for the pittance they receive as they are struggling to feed their families.
As a community we are now beginning to consider the products we buy and their origins. We are now able to get information about the companies we buy from which enables us to informed and therefore form a judgement in our buying decisions.
We are also now able to contribute to the development of for example education and health in needy parts of the world by buying gifts and items, which will support aid.
There are now many future projects, which aim to consider production which does not pollute the environment and which develop sustainability.
We are all playing our part by recycling; growing our own vegetables and being more discriminating about the ethics of the goods we buy.
