Shopping for perfume.

People have been using perfume for thousands of years. Perfume in the form of Frankincense and Myrrh along with rose and peppermint were used as part of religious ceremonies. For the Egyptians perfume and indeed make up was worn and important to both men and women.
Eau de Cologne was used in the Georgian era and people also made their own perfumes using herbs and flowers
But it was the advances in organic chemistry in the 19th century that saw the big step forward in the manufacture of perfume. It was then that chemists were able to identify the molecular structures of the elements that gave flowers their scents. As these were replicated it saw the birth of synthetic perfume.
By the 20th century perfume had become big business as it became mass-produced. The perfumes made were in response to the fashions of the time. Designer perfumes were introduced in 1921 Channel number 5 was developed by Coco Channel. This perfume still being very popular today.
The perfumes we bought changed as society changed. The 1930s saw Worth, Elizabeth Arden Dior and Rochas among others introducing perfumes.
By the 1960s as more of us were travelling abroad perfume became available and cheaper at duty free shops. Another development at this time was the Avon Company this made perfume accessible and delivered to the home.
Among the perfumes in the 1970s were Revlon and Nina Ricci and with the advent of power dressing came perfumes by Kalvin Klein and Giorgio.
As the market developed it wasn’t just the perfume itself but the bottles that attracted people. The shapes and styles became increasingly more imaginative.
We now  see the market in perfume for men has developed rapidly. As men today as with Egyptian counterparts enjoy the sensation of smelling good.
